About Bayonne

Bayonne is the historic capital of the French Basque Country, a fortified city at the meeting point of the Nive and the Adour. The Gothic cathedral of Sainte-Marie and its cloister crown Grand Bayonne, while Petit Bayonne across the Nive is the district of tapas bars, the Basque Museum and the Bonnat art collection. The city gave its name to the bayonet and to the ham, and it has been making chocolate since the sixteenth century.
