About Sare
Sare sits in a bowl of green hills under La Rhune, a village of large Basque farmhouses scattered around a square with a church, a fronton and a couple of hotels. It was a smugglers’ village for centuries, the border being a ridge walk away, and it is now a walkers’ village: paths lead to the Spanish ventas, to the prehistoric caves at the foot of the mountain and to the rack railway at the Col de Saint-Ignace.
