About Sare

Sare sits in a bowl of green hills under La Rhune, a village of large Basque farmhouses scattered around a square with a church, a fronton and a couple of hotels. It was a smugglers’ village for centuries, the border being a ridge walk away, and it is now a walkers’ village: paths lead to the Spanish ventas, to the prehistoric caves at the foot of the mountain. Ortillopitz, a seventeenth-century farmhouse open to visitors, shows how the houses were lived in.

The airport transfer runs through Arbonne and Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, then the D3 and D4 to Sare, about 50 minutes to the village, the caves or a hamlet on the slopes.
