About Ascain
Ascain is a village of white houses and red timbers around a square with the church, the fronton and two old hotels, a few kilometres inland from Saint-Jean-de-Luz on the road to the mountain. Pierre Loti wrote Ramuntcho here, the Nivelle runs under a Roman-looking bridge at the edge of the village, and La Rhune rises straight behind the roofs; the rack railway to its summit leaves from the Col de Saint-Ignace, ten minutes up the road.
