About Hendaye

The southernmost town of the French Basque Coast, Hendaye sits on the mouth of the Bidasoa opposite Hondarribia in Spain. It has the widest beach in the region, a sheltered bay with a marina, and the Château d’Abbadia, built by an explorer-astronomer in the 1860s on the cliffs of the Corniche. The frontier is a bridge, and Spanish is heard as often as French in the cafés of the Plage district.

From Biarritz station the car takes the A63 south for about 40 minutes, past Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Urrugne. Drop-offs range from the seafront hotels and campsites of Hendaye-Plage to the thalassotherapy centre, the marina, the town centre up the hill and the railway station.
