About Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is a fortified town at the foot of the Roncevaux pass, the traditional starting point of the Camino Francés to Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims collect their credential at the office on Rue de la Citadelle, walk down through the Porte Saint-Jacques and cross the old bridge over the Nive before climbing towards Spain. The citadel, the pink sandstone houses and the Monday market draw plenty of visitors who are not walking anywhere.
From the airport the transfer takes the D932 to Cambo-les-Bains and the D918 up the Nive valley through Itxassou, Bidarray and Saint-Martin-d’Arrossa, one of the prettiest roads in the region.
