About Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

At the head of the Nive valley, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port is the capital of the Basse-Navarre and the last French town before the Pyrenean crossing to Roncesvalles. The cobbled Rue de la Citadelle, the ramparts, the citadel above the roofs and the bridge over the Nive give it the look of a medieval postcard, and the Monday market fills the streets with Basque cheese, cider and espadrilles.

The transfer from Biarritz station heads inland on the D918 via Cambo-les-Bains and follows the river through the gorges past Bidarray, about 75 minutes in all.
